Preservation
As from the moment a painting is made it starts to change: natural ageing, warmth, humidity, the good care of the owner. (Unfortunately also incompetent restorations frequently are the cause of damage).
All this is reason to pay some attention on preservation of paintings, head aim is to PREVENT decline.
Besides regular inspection, there can already be achieved a lot with correct framing, but especially important is temperature and humidity.
This is important not only for museums, but also at home much is attainable by placing the painting in the right way, for example: do not place a painting near any heating system, or on a wall where it can be lit by the full sun, think about the warmth of lighting close by, a not isolated outside wall (damp), also placing it beside a regularly opened outside door or window can cause damage.
A painting is made with material which reacts on warmth and moist contracting itself or swell, unfortunately the different materials within a painting do not all react in the same manner, because of this tensions arise which for example cause distortion, and panels can even crack!
